Ingredients
- Raw rice or cooking rice – 1 cup
- Toor dal- 1/2 cup
- Small onions – 15
- Tomato-3 (small)
- Sambar powder – 1/2 tsp
- Water – 5 cups
- Green peas – 1/4 cup
- Drumstick – 1
- Carrot- 1 (small)
- Turmeric powder- a pinch
- Hing – a pinch
- Salt – as per taste
To Soak in water
- Tamarind – Lemon sized
To roast and Grind
- Oil – 1/2 tsp
- Red chilli – 6 to 8 nos
- Coriander seeds – 2 teaspoon
- Kadalai paruppu/Bengal gram – 2 tsp
- Cumin seed-1 tsp
- Fenugreek seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Grated coconut – 3 tsp
- Hing – a pinch/2 pieces
Preparation Method
2. Rinse the rice and toor dal well , Soak it for 30 mins.
3. Meanwhile roast and Grind the ingredients mentioned above to make the spice powder.
4.Add a drop of oil in a kadai and roast all the items mentioned under "to roast and grind"(add coconut at last)
5.Grind it well.
6. In a kadai , add some oil and ghee
7. Then add small onions, turmeric powder ,hing and sambar powder. Saute it for few seconds.
8.Then add chopped tomatoes and saute it slightly
9.Then add all chopped vegetables one by one ,saute it for few seconds.
10. Add tamarind extract over the vegetables.
11. Let the vegetables boil in tamarind water till all the raw smell disappears.Then add salt
12.Then mix the ground powder in to the water.After 2 min switch off the flame
13.In a pressure cooker,add the soaked rice and dal
14.Transfer the contents from kadai to pressure cooker.Mix it well.
15.Add 5 cups of water to the rice.Check for salt,add more if needed.
16. Close the lid and pressure cook it for 3 whistles.
17. Its important to note that cooked rice should be semisolid in consistency.
18.Now Sambar satham is ready to serve. Serve with Appalam / Pappad.
