RADISH (MULLANGI) SAMBAR

IMG_0236          Radish sambar plays major role in south indian dishes. Radish contains rich pottasium and it is good for our health. Radish comes with Red color and White color.

Ingredients

Toor dal – 1 cup
Radish – 2 (Medium size)
Tomato – 1 (Big size)
Small onions/shallots – 6 to 7
Green chili – 2
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
hing –1 tsp
Chili powder – 1 tsp
sambar powder – 1 tsp
Tamarind – Golf ball size

To Grind

Scrubbed coconut – 3 tsp
small onion  – 3 nos
Cumin seed – 1 tsp

To Temper

Oil – 1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds – 1/2 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Curry leaves- few

Preparation Method

1.First clean and cut radishes into round round pieces and pressure cook it with toor dal.

2.Soak tamarind in a cup of water.Grind all the things mentioned below “To Grind”

3.Chop onion,tomato and green chilies as like shown in the figure.

4.Heat oil in a pan.Add onions first.Saute it till turns to pink color.
5.Then add green chilies,tomatoes one by one.Then add turmeric powder, and hing.Saute it well for 3 min.

6.Then in a vessel add salt (i add 2 tsp),Chili powder and sambar powder(optional).

7.Take cooked dal along radish.Separate radish from it.
8.Extract the tamarind water and mix into the above.Add radish and 1 cup water into it.

9.Mix this into the pan.Allow to boil till the raw smell goes out.

10.Then smashed the cooked dal well.Mix the dal with the above.

11.After 3 min,Add the ground paste.Allow to boil for 5 min.

12.Heat oil in a pan.add fenugreek seeds,mustard seeds.When it spluttered,add curry leaves.

13.Mix this into the sambar.

14.Now radish sambar is ready to serve.
